Metfone, the Kingdom’s leading telecommunications company, yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to renew the agreement with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) to provide free internet to schools nationwide.

Under the five-year project, Metfone will provide free online connections to all public schools, teacher training centers, universities, provincial educational departments and also the ministry’s headquarters in Phnom Penh. In total, Metfone will have over 1,000 free connections.

Metfone’s general director, Nguyen Thanh Nhuong, said this program was very important for strengthening education in the country.

“Because of this, Metfone will continue strengthening its cooperation with the Ministry of Education to provide free internet to all educational institutions across the country,” said Mr. Thanh Nhuong.

“Metfone wants to enable the young generation of Cambodia to fulfill their potential and close to one million students, teachers and education staff will benefit from this program,” he added.

Mr. Thanh Nhuong stressed that for the Metfone-MoEYS cooperation to succeed, strong leadership was needed from the ministry to ensure that the free internet service are utilized fully in both the classroom and the field.

“In order to know what works and what doesn’t, Metfone would also like to get continuous feedback from the ministry so that we can improve our services, since this project will go on until 2020,” he said.

Education Minister Hang Chuon Naron, said Metfone’s free internet service will enable his ministry to offer online educational resources and courses online.

He added that Cambodian students will have a greater choice of assessing online resources and also greater learning flexibility.

“They will no longer be limited by the courses offered in their schools and can take extra ones through coursework offered online,” explained the minister.

Mr. Naron said that through the Metfone partnership, his ministry could also conduct teacher training courses through the internet and also post curriculum updates online.

The minister said online teacher training courses are being piloted in 39 schools across the country that already have well developed IT systems and computers, as well as regular electricity supply to connect to Metfone’s free internet service.

Mr. Naron added the 39 schools will also  pilot a software to track students’ school attendance based on their daily online logins.
“If a student is absent from school, the system will track and record it. Continuous cases of absence will warrant serious action from the teachers in consultation with parents,” he said.

“We hope that this is a win-win partnership between the ministry and Metfone, and highlights the private sector’s social responsibility,” said Mr. Naron.
